Tongan Language Week at Fun N Play Childcare Centre
Tongan Language Week was a wonderful opportunity for children at Fun N Play Childcare Centre Papatoetoe to learn, create, and celebrate Tongan language and culture. The children enjoyed creative activities, language learning, shape exploration, storytelling, and cultural experiences.
The children started with hand painting. They created their own designs using their hands and fingers. This activity encouraged creativity and self-expression. It also supported fine motor skills and hand coordination.
During mat time, the children explored words beginning with the letter R. They listened to new words and shared their ideas with the group. This supported vocabulary development, communication, listening skills, and confidence.
Our toddlers also explored different shapes. They practised identifying and naming each shape. This hands-on activity supported early maths skills, problem-solving, shape recognition, and vocabulary development.
The children then enjoyed the familiar rhyme Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? They joined in with repeated words and actions. This helped develop communication, memory, listening, and participation skills.
A highlight of the day was creating Tongan-inspired lei garlands. The children enjoyed making their own designs. They also developed creativity and fine motor coordination. The activity gave them a chance to learn about and appreciate Tongan culture and traditions.
During transition time, the children practised the letter T. They worked on letter recognition, pencil control, and concentration. This also connected their literacy learning with Tongan Language Week.
Overall, Tongan Language Week gave children meaningful ways to learn about language and culture. The activities also supported important early learning skills.
