This week, our tamariki enjoyed a meaningful and joyful Mother’s Day celebration filled with aroha, creativity, kindness, and connection. Our goal was to provide a nurturing and inclusive experience where tamariki could creatively express their appreciation for their mothers and caregivers while strengthening their sense of belonging, communication skills, and relationships within our learning community. Throughout the week, the children participated in a range of experiences that supported their learning, confidence, and emotional development while celebrating the important people in their lives.
On Monday, our focus was on identity and belonging as tamariki shared stories and drawings about their mums and caregivers. During mat time, the children confidently talked about the special things their mums do for them, sharing ideas with their peers and kaiako. We also enjoyed listening to the story “I Love My Mum,” which encouraged rich conversations about love, family, and caring relationships. Many tamariki proudly described their mums as kind, loving, helpful, and beautiful, while others expressed their feelings through drawing and mark-making activities. It was heartwarming to see the children using language to communicate their thoughts and experiences while strengthening their confidence in group discussions.
On Tuesday, our focus shifted towards creativity and fine motor development. Tamariki enthusiastically joined different arts and crafts experiences, including colouring, decorating, handprint flower painting, cereal flower art, and creating special artworks for their mums and caregivers. The children carefully placed colourful cereal pieces onto their flower designs, showing patience, concentration, and creativity while strengthening their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. During mat time, the children also shared what makes their mums special, listening carefully to one another and building confidence in expressing their ideas. The handprint flower collage activity became a favourite experience as tamariki carefully painted, pressed, and decorated their creations with great excitement. Through these meaningful art experiences, tamariki were able to express their love and appreciation in thoughtful and creative ways.
Wednesday focused on kindness, responsibility, and nurturing through dramatic and pretend play. Our pretend play area transformed into a caring family environment where tamariki explored family roles by taking care of dolls, preparing pretend meals, serving tea, and comforting babies. It was lovely to observe the children naturally showing empathy, cooperation, and gentle caring behaviours towards one another during their play. Tamariki worked together to create meaningful interactions, demonstrating kindness and responsibility as they cared for the dolls and shared resources with friends. These experiences supported their social and emotional development while helping them build understanding about caring relationships within families and communities.
On Thursday, tamariki were excited and deeply engaged in creating meaningful gifts and cards for their mums and caregivers. The children carefully decorated cards, created heart collages, and designed “Best Mum” trophies using different art materials and creative ideas. Many tamariki showed perseverance, independence, and pride while completing their special gifts, thoughtfully choosing colours, shapes, and decorations that reminded them of their loved ones. Some children proudly explained, “My mum likes flowers!” while another shared, “I made this heart for my grandma,” and one child happily said, “This trophy is for the best mum!” These beautiful conversations reflected the children’s love, thoughtfulness, and growing ability to express appreciation for the important people in their lives. These experiences encouraged self-expression, creativity, and thoughtful acts of kindness as tamariki prepared heartfelt surprises for their families.
To end our wonderful week, Friday became a beautiful celebration day where mums, caregivers, and whānau joined us at the centre for a special Mother’s Day gathering. Families enjoyed flower art bonding experience, morning tea, photo opportunities, and quality time together. It was lovely to see mothers and children sitting together, creating colourful flower artworks side by side, sharing conversations, smiles, and laughter while strengthening their special bond through creativity and teamwork.The celebration created strong connections between home and centre while strengthening our sense of community, belonging, and whanaungatanga.
Throughout the week, our tamariki demonstrated creativity, communication, kindness, empathy, confidence, and a deep sense of aroha as they celebrated the important people in their lives. This beautiful week of learning strongly reflected the strands of Te Whāriki, particularly Belonging | Mana Whenua, Communication | Mana Reo, Contribution | Mana Tangata, Exploration | Mana Aotūroa, and Wellbeing | Mana Atua, as tamariki engaged in meaningful experiences that supported their relationships, creativity, identity, and emotional wellbeing.
