As we celebrate Māori Language Week, also known as Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, tamariki are welcome to wear a touch of white, red, or black as we enjoy learning about and celebrating te reo Māori together.
Learning Te Reo Māori Through Songs
Our toddlers enjoyed songs, actions, and simple te reo Māori words during mat time. They practised greetings such as “Kia ora” and used movement and repetition to connect words with meaning. This supported communication, confidence, and a sense of belonging.
Discovering Numbers in Te Reo Māori
Our preschoolers explored the number 2 – rua through Māori songs, counting, and repetition. They practised counting two objects and recognising the word “rua”, supporting early mathematical learning while developing their connection with te reo Māori.
Building Early Literacy and Numeracy Skills
During transition time, tamariki enjoyed a name-recognition and art activity. They practised recognising and copying the letters in their names while also counting from 1–10. This supported early literacy, numeracy, and fine-motor development.
Hidden Numbers: Learning Through Discovery
Through “Hidden Numbers Magic,” little learners used droppers and colourful paints to discover hidden numbers and shapes. The activity developed fine-motor skills, concentration, hand-eye coordination, curiosity, and early maths skills.
Learning and Playing Outdoors
Outdoor play included the sandpit, bikes, balancing area, and water play, helping children develop confidence, coordination, and communication. The children also enjoyed caterpillar art and cheering their friends as they played together, creating opportunities for friendship and shared enjoyment.
