Celebrating Chinese Language Week Through Play
Children at Fun N Play Childcare Centre in Papatoetoe celebrated Chinese Language Week through a range of creative, active and hands-on learning experiences. Throughout the day, children enjoyed indoor and outdoor activities that introduced them to Chinese culture, colours, numbers and creative expression. These engaging experiences encouraged children to learn, explore and connect with different cultural traditions through play.
Exploring Chinese Culture Through Play
First, the children decorated Chinese lanterns with different designs and patterns. This creative activity encouraged self-expression. It also introduced them to a traditional element of Chinese culture.
During mat time, our preschoolers enjoyed a popcorn kernel and scarf activity. They moved the scarves in different ways and explored movement together. As a result, they enjoyed an engaging group experience.
The children also took part in a chopsticks activity. They picked up pom-poms and transferred them into bowls. This helped strengthen their fine-motor skills, hand-eye coordination and concentration. At the same time, they enjoyed a fun cultural learning experience.
Learning Through Hands-On Activities
Our toddlers sorted colourful blocks and used them to build towers. Through this activity, they developed colour recognition, coordination and problem-solving skills. They also enjoyed learning through active play.
Next, our transition children explored number 1 through counting and tracing. This hands-on activity supported their early numeracy skills. It also helped them practise number recognition and formation.
Meanwhile, the children created moon artwork using dabbing techniques. They discovered a little bunny hidden on the moon. After peeling it away, they revealed the bunny’s impression underneath. This creative activity encouraged curiosity, creativity and careful observation.
