Over the past two weeks, our childcare centre has been intentionally supporting tamariki to understand the significance of Waitangi Day through meaningful, play-based experiences linked to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Tamariki explored the ideas of working together, having a voice and being included (Participation), and caring for our culture, language, and environment.

During mat times, children listened to stories, viewed visual resources, and shared ideas about fairness, respect, and caring for people and our natural world. Tamariki used simple te reo Māori during greetings and routines, supporting the protection and appreciation of Māori language and culture.

Throughout the two weeks, tamariki engaged in weaving, arts and crafts, different artwork, colouring, and costume-making, working alongside their peers, sharing resources, and supporting one another showing partnership in action. Through water play, children explored caring for water as a taonga, learning about protection of our environment while cooperating and taking turns.

A special highlight of our celebration was creating our own centre treaty. Tamariki shared ideas about kindness, respect, and looking after one another, then proudly signed the treaty, showing participation and understanding that everyone has a voice and a role in our learning community.

Tamariki developed an understanding of the significance of Waitangi Day through collaborative, creative, and sustained learning experiences. They demonstrated respect for Māori culture and language, confidence in participation, and a strong sense of belonging.

Kaiako will continue to support tamariki by using te reo Māori in everyday routines and play, encouraging shared decision-making and collaboration, providing opportunities to care for the environment, and revisiting our centre treaty to strengthen understanding of respect and belonging.

This two-week journey honoured Te Tiriti o Waitangi through everyday learning, relationships, and play.
Tinopai tamariki – learning together, growing together.
