Exploring Māori Culture and Community at Te Puea Marae
Tamariki and families from Fun N Play Childcare Centre Papatoetoe visited Te Puea Marae to learn about Māori culture, traditions and community.
Before leaving, we gathered for a prayer led by Kaiako Surbhi. During the bus journey, the children enjoyed singing The Wheels on the Bus.
At Te Puea Marae, we were welcomed through a traditional Māori welcome ceremony. The tamariki learned about Māori culture and New Zealand’s bicultural heritage. Inside the meeting house, they explored family ancestry, ancestors, carvings, history and the important role of the marae.
The children shared morning tea, joined in Māori songs, explored the marae and enjoyed dancing together. They learned that a marae is a place where people come together to connect, share, celebrate and support one another.
The visit ended with a farewell ceremony, where we thanked our hosts and said goodbye.
This Māori cultural learning activity supported the children’s communication, confidence, respect and sense of belonging. It also connected with Te Whāriki and its focus on belonging and communication.
At Fun N Play Childcare Centre Papatoetoe, we welcome families to enrol their children in a safe, caring environment where they can learn through play, culture, exploration and community.
