Today, our tamariki enjoyed a wonderful day filled with learning, creativity, and fun experiences together. Firstly, during mat time, tamariki learned about the importance of water. They discussed why water is essential for people, animals, and plants. In addition, they shared thoughtful ideas about how we can care for and protect this precious resource, which helped build a deeper appreciation for the world around them.
Furthermore, as part of our Matariki learning, tamariki explored Waipuna-ā-Rangi, the Matariki star connected with rain and water. To bring this learning to life, the children went outside where, as a result, they splashed, jumped, and played in muddy puddles. Through this hands-on experience, they observed how rain creates puddles and, moreover, how rain nourishes rivers, lakes, gardens, and the natural environment. Consequently, this helped them make meaningful connections between water, Matariki, and the importance of rain for sustaining life.
Meanwhile, this learning was extended indoors as tamariki observed pictures and discussed different weather patterns. They also shared their own experiences of rainy days; in doing so, they strengthened their understanding of how water changes our surroundings. Additionally, this supported their communication and thinking skills.
Subsequently, during our transition programme, tamariki explored patterns and practised tracing numbers. These activities helped develop early maths skills, while also supporting number recognition and pencil control. The children showed great focus and enthusiasm; in fact, some worked together as a team, supporting each other and taking turns, which further strengthened their confidence and social skills.
Finally, throughout the day, tamariki enjoyed singing songs, dancing, and participating in both indoor and outdoor play experiences. Overall, these activities encouraged creativity, confidence, movement, and positive friendships, while also supporting strong social interaction and engagement.
