Rationale
We believe in the value of pets within our learning environment. We consider the caring of pets as a good way for children to develop confidence, compassion, respect and further our knowledge about the care of animals.
Policy
- All pets will be well cared for. Their homes will be cleaned weekly (minimum) and supplied fresh food and water on a daily basis.
- All food intended for our pets will be stored in a clearly named container to avoid confusion between adult and pet food – this will be stored away from children but not located in the bathroom.
- Children will be encouraged to participate in the caring of the pets.
- Staff will ensure that they and all children wash their hands well after handling the pets or any of the pets’ equipment.
- Staff will role model appropriate skills needed for handling of the pets. Staff will monitor all handling and interactions between a pet and the children to ensure that both parties are safe.
- Any pet that becomes unwell will be taken to the veterinary clinic as soon as possible and isolated from the children until then.
- On special occasions families may be encouraged to bring their pets to the Centre. Any animal that shows aggression will be asked to leave the Centre. Animals need to be restrained at all times whilst on the grounds of the centre.
- Staff will ensure that there is a solution of care for our pets during weekends and public holidays when the centre is closed.
- Animals that are suitable include: guinea pigs, rabbits, mice, rats, fish, frogs, tadpoles, lizards & small birds.
- Animals that are not suitable include: dogs, chickens & cats as their faecal material may contain pathogenic organisms & can contaminate the premises. Turtles are not acceptable in the centre as they are known to carry salmonella.
- A procedure for the care of any pets that we decide to have in our centre, (whether long or short term) will be developed at the time. This procedure will include: specific care items for the pet ie after hours, specialty food and where this is stored in the centre etc.
